6KQ managed Ethernet field switch meets user requirements for small
form factor Gigabit switches in demanding industrial applications
GarrettCom Europe has expanded its 6K range of Ethernet switches with the launch of the 6KQ, a rugged managed field switch that can be configured with up to twelve 100Mb fibre ports. Highly compact, the 6KQ has been developed to meet user requirements for small form factor Gigabit Ethernet switches in demanding industrial applications. Sealed to IP53 for dust and water resistance, and with a unique case design for maximum heat dissipation, the 6KQ is ideally suited to use in factory automation, video surveillance, power substations, and oil and gas exploration and pipeline applications.
The 6KQ draws upon the 6K family’s modular architecture to provide the greatest configuration flexibility in its class. It can be configured with user-selected combinations of 10Mb, 100Mb and Gigabit fibre ports of any connector type. Copper port options include 10/100/1000 RJ-45, as well as up to eight 10/100 PoE (power over Ethernet) ports. To meet the needs of demanding industrial Ethernet applications, the 6KQ can easily handle stressful workload mixtures of high-burst data traffic and priority streaming traffic.
An important feature of the 6KQ is its patent-pending advanced thermal design, using a ribbed aluminium case to produce maximum heat dissipation in a rugged, sealed package. The design eliminates the need for fan cooling, resulting in a more compact product that meets a wider range of international standards for use in applications such as power substations. Further, with its IP53 construction and optional conformal coating, the 6KQ meets Class 1 Division 2 certification requirements for use in hazardous environments such as those found in oil and gas, mining and chemical plants. Thus, the 6KQ switch brings the benefits of advanced managed networking deeper into hostile environments.
The 6KQ managed switch uses the powerful MNS-6K software that is included with all 6K family switches. The MNS-6K network management software provides for a complete range of management services designed for ease-of-use, security, and redundancy, offering features including GUI ease of use, secure web management, SNMPv2/v3 management control, 802.1p QoS packet prioritisation, tag-based VLANs, IGMP snooping and IGMP-L2 for managing multicast, port security, RADIUS and TACACS+ support. There are also a choice of multiple redundancy options including RSTP and GarrettCom’s rapid-ring- recovery S-Ring and RS-Ring products.
The 6KQ is UL approved and offers NEBS L3 and ETSI compliance. It meets IEC 61850 and IEEE 6163 standards for use in power stations, and NEMA TS-2 and TEES requirements for DC powered traffic control equipment.
