PoE modules for 6K family of managed switches
GarrettCom, the company which pioneered mixed media industrial Ethernet products with its range of configurable Ethernet switches, has taken the technology to a new level with the introduction of Power over Ethernet (PoE) ports into its 6K range of switches. An industry first for industrial-grade switches, the development provides a clean and cost-effective solution for supporting PoE products such as security cameras in power utility substations or remote network devices in a host of other industrial applications.
The range of Power over Ethernet options from GarrettCom Europe now includes a series of PoE port modules, offering between four and eight PoE ports, that can be factory configured in any 6K switch. This ability for flexible configuration allows PoE ports to sit alongside regular fibre and copper ports, giving users a simple means of deploying Power over Ethernet devices on the same network as conventionally wired products without the added cost and inconvenience of having to buy separate PoE switches.
GarrettCom Europe is the only supplier to offer a full line of heavy-duty PoE power-sourcing switches, ranging from small 4-port switches to rugged 32-port managed switches with Gb backbones. The new PoE port modules for the 6K swtiches come in 35 different port configurations to address a wide range of application needs. Modules are factory configured, and the company is offering upgrades for existing 6K switches.
PoE combines data and power on the same copper cabling, greatly simplifying installation and reducing costs. Industrial control systems are already realising the benefits of Ethernet – such as interoperability across multiple vendors, high bandwidth, topological flexibility and optional redundancy – and PoE extends this further by offering the single-media data and power transmission formerly only offered by fieldbuses. The growing list of PoE devices available for industrial systems now includes a host of sensors and data loggers, along with video cameras, rugged VoIP phones, wireless access units and annunciators.

"And with the availability of PoE devices complemented by our range of flexible, rugged industrial switches, the last technical advantage of traditional fieldbus has been removed, allowing users to reap the benefits of Ethenet in any industrial application."
GarrettCom's PoE modules are available in two formats: Pass-Through and Power Inside. The 48V DC Power Pass-Through modules, with up to eight PoE ports, can be configured inside 6K series switches with 48V DC. The 6K switches with AC or 125V DC power require a Power Inside power supply that can support up to four PoE ports.
The 6K series of managed Ethernet switches includes up to 32 ports of configurable Ethernet connectivity, ranging from 10Mb copper to 1Gb fibre backbones in a single switch, as well as sophisticated managed network software featuring security, redundancy, performance and ease of use.
