Danish State Rail Operator DSB Turns to GarrettCom for an In-Carriage Network Solution
DSB was looking for a way to integrate security, surveillance, passenger counting and infotainment technologies in an in-carriage IP-network solution.
DSB also wanted to ensure that the system installed complied with EN50155, including its prohibition on the use of fans. Also, as a precautionary measure EN50155 suggests using protective coatings for PCBs in electronic products to counteract corrosive atmospheres that are often present in railroad applications.
The networking system also needed to be powered from an auxiliary 110V DC system, which is present in each coach. DSB turned to GarrettCom and the 6KQ Managed Ethernet switches to provide the networking solution.

Motorways in the UK using GarrettCom products
In a bid to decrease congestion and increase safety on the UK’s roads the Highways Agency decided to try a new approach. In partnership with professional services group Mouchel Parkman, a strategic plan was developed to improve traffic flow within the UK’s existing infrastructure and road systems.Mouchel Parkman chose GarrettCom’s field hardened 6K16 managed switch and innovative redundancy manager S-Ring. GarrettCom’s 6K16 Switch is housed in a tough steel casing and is designed for temperature uncontrolled environments, and so is ideally suited to connect the locations on the roadside together.

GarrettCom PoE switches power UK roadside remote monitoring stations
A UK national transportation infrastructure project has been set-up to maintain over 4600 miles of core road network (motorways and A roads). The objective of the project is to develop travel information services that will improve utilization of the trunk road network through the provision of better information to road users.GarrettCom’s Hardened mP62 switches in field cabinets and 6K16 managed switches are deployed along the Pinners Point roadway and in the Midtown Tunnel to relay information to the VDOT Traffic Control Centre (TCC). The traffic controller consults video cameras spaced along the roadways to pinpoint the incident site. GarrettCom’s S-Ring™ Redundancy Management Software facilitates rapid self-healing should a break in the Ethernet LAN communications ring occur.

Delaware DOT uses DX routers and 6K switches for traffic control
Delaware DOT wanted to extend its traffic flow management and video monitoring at some of its more isolated locations. Many of these locations lacked fibre or high speed connections back to the DelDOT Traffic Operations Centre (TOC) and had serial connections to the traffic controllers in the remote traffic cabinets. Many of the video surveillance cameras at these locations also required serial connections to the legacy analogue camera controls. To provide traffic control networking to its more isolated locations, DelDOT selected the DX900 Industrial Routers. DelDOT liked the DX900’s hardened package rated for outdoor use, and the product’s ability to offer all of the different functions DelDOT needed in one box. The DX900 offers four serial ports: one of which is used to connect to the 170 traffic controller in the remote traffic cabinet. Other serial ports are connected to legacy analogue serial camera controls. There is at least one analogue monitoring camera at each of these remote locations.

Palo Alto uses GarrettCom in advanced transportation systems (ATMS)
Located in the heart of Silicon Valley where the development of the Ethernet networking standard took place, the City of Palo Alto took a close look at how the newer 100 Mb and 1 Gigabit Ethernet technologies could provide a cost-effective, comprehensive traffic solution that could be upgraded easily as technology and bandwidth demands increased. The Utilities Department had recently installed a fibre-optic network which was available for lease to the Traffic Department, providing a ready-made, high-availability, noise interference-free communications system.GarrettCom provided a combination of ITS-Blade cards, which slide neatly into McCain’s 2070L controllers to provide Ethernet connectivity, and P62F Premium-rated Switches for outdoor use in the older 2070 boxes that did not accommodate an Ethernet card. GarrettCom 6K25 switching hubs in City Hall and in the TMC complete the Ethernet package.

Texas DOT uses hardened Ethernet switches and wireless for traffic control
To monitor and manage traffic flow, and to view accidents for better emergency response, TxDOT wanted to send video back to the Ft Worth Traffic Control Centre (TCC) from 150 of the busiest intersections in the city. When there was a problem at one of the intersections off of a Ft Worth exit ramp, traffic tended to back up onto the main highway and slow traffic along an extended section of the highway.TxDOT chose GarrettCom’s hardened P62 switches to provide Ethernet connectivity, 100Mb bandwidth, and reliable operation in extreme temperature weather environments. The P62 Switches were designed for outdoor deployment, and feature a unique thermal technique (patent pending) using the case as a heat sink in order to get the heat out of the electronics. The resulting lowered temperature electronics increases reliability.

West Des Moines moves to sophisticated ATMS system
West Des Moines used Traffic Systems Solutions Company (TSSC) to assist in a system design that looked ahead to all the opportunities that current technology could bring. The ability to monitor traffic conditions and modify real-time traffic flow during natural hazards such as snow, ice, and flooding, as well as man-made ones such as detours, construction, and roadway incidents, was highly attractive. One of the key components for the success of the system was the identification of field-hardened IP networking and video equipment that could reliably function in extreme weather conditions.TSSC chose two of GarrettCom’s field-hardened switches. P62F Ethernet switches support direct field connection to Ethernet radios, Siemens M50 Series traffic controllers and other devices which have IP addressing. In addition, the West Des Moines system design required space-saving Ethernet cards to be directly installed into some M50 controllers.

Virginia DOT interchange uses GarrettCom switches to manage traffic
VDOT consulted with S.Rock/Estabrook Corp. to develop a system that could handle the traffic demands of this busy interchange. Tunnels and bridges pose particular challenges in traffic management. Once a traffic incident occurs, moving traffic around blockages is very difficult. Both prevention of incidents – such as over-height trucks entering tunnels – and early warnings to motorists that can route them around bottlenecks are critical to smooth traffic flow.GarrettCom’s Hardened mP62 switches in field cabinets and 6K16 managed switches are deployed along the Pinners Point roadway and in the Midtown Tunnel to relay information to the VDOT Traffic Control Center (TCC). The traffic controller consults video cameras spaced along the roadways to pinpoint the incident site.
